JacksonFive's
Free Weekly "Learning English" Newsletter
Issue: 05 "Areas and
Rooms" March 19, 2000
=====================================================
Dear Readers,
This week has certainly been a tense week for
Taiwan
(def: stressful, nervous). Now that the election is
over, I think
we all need to relax and "get on" (def:
continue) with our daily
life.
For myself, I spent today unwinding (def: relaxing)
with some
Canadian friends. We visited 田尾 and spent a lovely day in
each
other's company. We visited many outstanding
flower and bonsai
nurseries. We also bought many beautiful
plants for our homes in
Taichung (especially my friends). The sunny
yet mild weather was
just perfect. It was very nice getting out
into the countryside
and getting some fresh air and exercise. I
just hope I wasn't
sunburned today from all the outdoor walking at
noontime ^_^
On the home front, I was pleasantly surprised that
our newsletter
readership is still growing fast even with all the
election
excitement this week, http://www.path2english.com/Comments.htm
Chill people (relax) and
have a good week,
JacksonFive
THIS WEEK's FEATURED QUESTION:
What do you call the different areas or rooms,
inside or outside,
your home?
ANSWER:
1) Living Room: a large room used to host guest and typically the room
that you see immediately when you enter a
home. This room usually
has the best furniture in the house.
example:
"John, please help me clean the
living room. Our friends from
Taiwan are coming today."
2) Dining Room: the area where you eat.
example:
"We have our meals every evening
in the dining room."
3) Kitchen: area used for cooking and preparing meals. Sometimes
the
kitchen and dining areas are combined into one room
or area.
example:
"Kathy, where in the kitchen are
the new dishes?"
4) Den or Family Room: the room where the family relaxes and typically
watches TV. In some smaller homes, the family
room and living room
are "merged together" into one room (def:
combined).
example:
"Our family watched the latest
"007" movie in the den last night."
5) Master Bedroom: the parent's bedroom or the largest bedroom in the
house.
example:
"Can you help me move these boxes
to the master bedroom?"
6) Second (third) Bedroom: usually the children's room or the second
largest bedroom in the house.
example:
"Please put all the children's
toys in the second bedroom."
7) Basement: the area under the first floor of the house and typically
there is a small door that allows you to enter the
basement.
example:
"To enter the basement, you have
to go through the door to the
right of the washroom."
8) Attic: the area right underneath the roof, usually used for
storage.
example:
"George, where in the attic is our
family photo album?"
9) Bathroom, Washroom, Restroom, The John, Powder Room (for women),
Ladies' Room, "Boys' Room": I think you
know what this small room
is. Please try not to call it "toilet".
For example, in a restaurant
say, "Where is the restroom?" not,
"Where is the toilet?"
10) Front Yard: the area right in front of the house; usually have
grass, trees, and flowers.
example:
"Our neighbors have a
beautiful front yard!"
11) Back Yard: the area behind the house. Just like the front yard,
except it is in the back and is usually
a private area (fences on
all four sides).
example:
"Our children enjoys
playing soccer in the back yard."
12) Garage: the small building where the family car is parked and
typically also the place where the lawn
mower (to cut grass) and
other gardening tools and supplies are
kept.
example:
"Please park your car
in the garage when you come home tonight."
13) Driveway: the narrow road connecting the garage to the street and
typically also the area where the
family vehicles are washed.
example:
"Please don't block
the driveway. I need to park in the garage
tonight."
14) Porch or Deck: an outdoor second floor area. An outside
attached
area used for barbecues and accessing
the back yard. This area
doesn't have a roof.
example:
"Let's barbecue this
weekend on the porch."
15) Balcony: like a porch but usually on the 3rd or higher floors.
Doesn't allow you to access the back
yard.
example:
"Please put this plant
outside on the porch so it can get some
sunlight."
Note: some of the above rooms or areas might not exist in
every home.
