Free Weekly "Learning English" Newsletter
Issue: 16       "What's on a road?"      June 4, 2000
=====================================================

Dear Members,

This week I made a big decision in my life. I have given up my
day job in Taichung (e-business) to devote more time to the
JacksonFive English School. My income will take a big cut, but
it is a sacrifice that I'm willing to make. The JacksonFive
School has been a dream of mine for five years, and it needs me
right now. Have you ever had to make a similar "tough decision"?
Have you ever had to sacrifice something in pursuit of your
dreams, financially or otherwise? If yes, I like to hear from
  you.

On the bright side, the school is coming together beautifully:
big, spacious classrooms and a strong curriculum. Every teacher,
parent, or student that has entered the school has complimented
it. I can't take credit for everything. I like to take this
opportunity to thank all my foreign and local friends who have
helped and supported me. "Thank you from the bottom my heart!"

Next Sunday, June 11th, the JacksonFive School will hold its
Grand Opening. I hope many of you can come and support me. It
isn't easy trying to start an English School that makes a
difference. Actually, it is much more difficult than I thought.
There are so many details and expenses. However, if many of our
loyal JacksonFive members can come, it would make me very happy.
Please bring your friends or tell your Taichung friends about
our Grand Opening. You can find the school's location and
contact number at this website, http://www.jacksonfive.com.tw/
Regarding the schedule for the Grand Opening, it is as follows:
2:00-3:00 Christian Service to Bless the School
3:00-4:30 Open House, Teaching Demo, Prize Raffle

                                                           Please come and support me,
                                                           JacksonFive

THIS WEEK's FEATURED TOPIC:

    "What's on a road?"

ANSWER:

1) Streetlights: the lights that you see on a road. They can be
    street lamps or intersection lights.
      Example:
"TaichungKung road is very bright because there are many
       streetlights."

2) "Sets of Lights" or "Lights": the lights at the intersections.
      Example:
"Please go down two sets of lights and turn right. You will see
my school at the corner." (If there are no lights at the corner,
it doesn't count as a set of lights.)

3) Intersection: anywhere one street crosses another.
      Example:
"Don't cross any street or railroad intersections without looking
       both ways."

4) "Curb" AKA "Street Curb": the side of the road where the
street ends and the sidewalk begins. There is usually a bump
    there.
      Example:
"Please park next to the curb."

5) Sidewalk: the sides of the road where cars can't drive and people
can walk. You can say sidewalks are roads for people.
    Example:
"Don't walk on the road. It is dangerous. Always walk on the
       sidewalk."

6) Pedestrian Crosswalk / Pedestrian Lights: pedestrian crosswalk is
the path that you take to cross the road. It usually has white
paint on it showing you the path. Pedestrian lights are the
lights that tell you when it is safe to cross.

7) Speed Bumps: the long horizontal bumps that government build into
the road to make sure you don't drive too fast. They are usually
put in parking lots and other places where driving slow is very
important. If you drive too fast over a speed bump, it is very
    uncomfortable.

8) Snaking through Traffic: making fast left and right lane changes.
      Example:
"Snaking through traffic is very dangerous and it isn't worth the
extra risk to get there a little bit sooner."

9) Road Kill: slang for animals killed on the road.
    Example:
"Road kills in Taiwan are cats and dogs while road kills in Canada
       are moose and deer ^_^"
