JacksonFive's
Free Weekly "Learning English" Newsletter
Issue: 18       "Forces of Nature"      June 18, 2000
=====================================================

Dear Readers,

I'm sure we all had a bit of a scare for the last couple of weeks
with the earthquake and all. Do you remember me asking about what
you did during and after the earthquake? One of our members wrote
back to me with the following:
"... Yes, the force or power of nature is truly big and scary to
me sometime. Same as you, I was outside drinking beer with my
friends when the earth shook last Sunday early morning. All we
knew was the earth was shaking, but we knew it would be no
problem. So we just seated, not move and waited. After 3 min, we
assured it was ok so we continued drinking beer till 4:00am ..."
Sounds like a good way to "ride through" earthquakes to me (def:
come through). You end up not knowing if it is the earth that is
rocking or yourself that is rocking ^_^ I must say though, I
wasn't lucky enough to be drinking. I was preparing for the
JacksonFive Grand Opening. Party on boys!

Our loyal reader Jane who brought
荔枝 from 南投 to my Grand
Opening finally contacted me. She is so sweet. She said she
    brought the
荔枝 all the way from 南投 as a good luck symbol.
She said her wish is that it will bring me many students. I guess
I shouldn't have eaten it so quickly and hung it on the wall
instead ^_^ It was really good though Jane ^_^ Thanks again Jane
for your visit and well wishes.

As you can tell by the late delivery of our newsletters, I've been
very busy with the JacksonFive English School recently. I'm trying
to create the best English School in Taichung if not Taiwan.
Thanks for everyone's support and understanding during this busy
    period.

I've even received some interesting emails after the Grand Opening.
Three of our readers wanted to open JacksonFive branch schools in
Taipei. Many of you wanted to send your children to JacksonFive
and asked if we had a school in Taipei. It is also very
encouraging that all the parents of our JacksonFive School are very
supportive. We have many students who didn't like learning English
at other schools but loved our school.

During the Grand Opening, it was encouraging that many people
including an English professor from the ChangHua Teacher University
said our school was the best English School they have ever visited.
The "facilities" are spacious and beautiful (def: surroundings &
equipments). The teaching material is very good, and the teaching
team is composed of some of the most famous foreign English
teachers in Taichung (I'm not kidding).

As good schools also attract good teachers so our JacksonFive
School now has a list of experienced foreign teachers wanting to
teach here. This is a bit funny. I don't have a long list of
students yet, but a long list of good teachers ^_^ How strange ^_^
I think our school is the "best kept secret in Taichung" right now.
I need to find more students for these experienced teachers to
teach. They have so much faith in our school and its mission. I
don't want to let them down ^_^ Who are you afraid to let down?

I must take a bit of time to thank these foreign teachers who are
also some of my best friends. "Thank you for supporting our
JacksonFive School and our mission of creating a fun and rewarding
environment to learn." These teacher friends have been so
supportive and giving. Some of them even told me they could teach
for FREE until our school is profitable ("of course not, but I
really appreciate the concern"). Where can you find friends and
    teachers like these?

THIS WEEK's FEATURED TOPIC:

    "Forces of Nature"

ANSWER:

I should have said violent forces of nature. The recent earthquakes
gave me the inspiration to do some research and write about this
  topic.

1)Hurricanes: a tropical cyclone (def: rapid inward circulation of air
     masses about a low-pressure center).
Goto this website to learn more about hurricanes and practice
     reading,
     http://www.discovery.com/stories/science/hurricanes/hurricanes.html.
You can also create your own hurricanes here. Pay attention to the
prepositions in the article (e.g. in, above, of, etc.). Ask
yourself honestly which preposition would you use and why the
article is the same or different.

2)Typhoon: a tropical cyclone located in the China Seas or West
Pacific (correct me if I'm wrong, but scientifically are typhoons
the same as hurricanes except for location?)

3)Tornadoes: a cyclone of fast wind on land. Many of these occur in
     North America.
Goto these websites to learn more about tornadoes and practice
     reading,
     http://www.sciam.com/explorations/052096explorations.html &
http://www.tahoetwisters.com/ (you can see great photo's of
"twisters" by clicking "twister gallery". Twister is another name
     for tornado.)

4)Earthquake: no need to explain this one, but did you know a small
earthquakes is called "tremors". You can read more about earthquakes
     at this excellent Discovery website,
     http://tlc.discovery.com/tlcpages/greatquakes/greatquakes.html You
can also play the earthquake simulation game. It will keep you
     entertained for a little while.

5)Tsunami: I never knew about tsunami's until I came to Asia. These
are very big waves in the ocean caused by big underwater earthquakes.
These waves are very deadly and can kill. Read more about tsunami's
     here http://www.sciam.com/1999/0599issue/0599gonzalez.html
Tsunami as you can probably tell is a Japanese-English word.

<< JacksonFive Family News >>
    1) One of our readers said he received 2,700 emails from me. Of
        course, I didn't send these. I scanned my computer and I don't
have a virus either (I think). Our JacksonFive member email
addresses are also kept privately on my personal computer so no
one else has access. Has anyone had a similar experience with
our newsletter? I know you like getting emails from me, but
2,700 is an "over-kill" (def: too much) ^_^
    2) If you haven't read them yet, I have put lots of new "English
Shares" on our website. Enjoy and learn!
    3) JacksonFive needs you! Every member please email me at least one
"topic suggestion" for future newsletters. Don't be lazy. I need
your contributions and help to make our newsletter even better.

(If you benefited from this newsletter, please share it with a friend.)
