JacksonFive's
Free Weekly "Learning English" Newsletter
Issue: 25 "Being a Pedestrian in Taiwan" Aug 13, 2000
=====================================================
Dear Readers,
This is the first issue coming to you from our new newsletter
system. Let me know if you noticed anything different about it ^_^
Today, we taught the first computer class at our JacksonFive
School. To be honest, I was a bit nervous. I've never taught
computers to 5-8 year olds before. I'm glad I did a lot of
preparation beforehand. All in all, I think the class went quite
well, and the kids really enjoyed the lesson. Actually, I even had
to force them to leave ^_^
On this note, I'm still working out some computer bugs at the
school. Even right at this moment, the computer behind me is
reloading Windows98. Did you know there is an old joke about
reloading windows 98 times before it will work? Have you heard
this joke before?
Maybe I'm just being a perfectionist. I like my computers and
network operating without any "quirks" (def: strange
occurrences).
For example, yesterday when I shared the new Epson 460 printer
over the network, all the computers developed funny network printing
errors. It wasn't anything too serious, and I'm sure many people
would have just ignored the error since the printing was still OK.
But no, I had to pour my heart into the problem and stayed up until
4am debugging it. The manual wasn't any help! I finally through
"trial and error" changed some settings in the driver, which
so far
has corrected the problem. I think the printer driver was
essentially trying to monitor the networked Epson printer, but
treating it as if it was connected locally. Well obviously, the
printer could not be found locally. This causes a
"bothersome"
(def: troublesome) "generic" (def: nothing specific)
connection
error. What a stupid printer driver!
What was your most stupid or funny computer related problem? Was
it a computer error or human error ^_^

THIS WEEK's FEATURED TOPIC:
"Being a Pedestrian in Taiwan"
ANSWER:
I remember when I first came to Taiwan, I wasn't even able to cross
the street. It was just too scary. There were so many cars and
fast scooter zipping past me in a "chaotic manner" (def:
without
order) that I just froze at the side of the road. I couldn't even
figure out what rule of driving they were using.
Have you ever tried to walk through a popular area? You might
start on the sidewalk but soon you'll be weaving through illegally
parked cars and food stalls. So many things are stopping you from
walking a straight line ^_^
I don't think Taiwanese people are intentionally making their
surrounding so challenging for pedestrians. I think the government
needs to help make the changes necessary to create a Taiwan, which
is friendlier for pedestrians and cyclist alike. After all, these
are also the only forms of totally pollution free transportation we
have ^_^
I know in some new areas the government is making these changes.
We definitely should all fully support and encourage these efforts.
Remember, human beings are born to walk so let's make it easier to
do so!
