Free Weekly "Learning English" Newsletter
Issue: 26 "An Unexpected Day of Rest" Aug 20, 2000
=====================================================

Dear Readers,

Congratulations! Our family is getting so large that we are
getting the attention of my ISP.

Last week, my ISP called me and left me a message asking me to
stop sending advertisements or they will disconnect me. I guess
because I was sending so many emails, they thought I was just
another person sending unwanted advertisements (spams).

The problem was when they left me this message, they didn't leave
me their name. I called them up, but no one knew whom it was that
called me or what it might be about. This got me a bit angry!
I'm sure you would be too. If you spent 12-15 hours a week doing
something good for society without any financial compensation, I'm
sure you wouldn't appreciate it if someone told you to stop sending
    "junk email".

I called them three times and was finally able to reach a polite
customer service lady, Ms. Hong, who listened to my problem. I
told her she should have her boss look at our website and tell me
if I'm doing anything wrong. Her boss looked at it and told me it
was totally proper. Ms. Hong apologized for their mistake. So it
doesn't happen again, I asked that their department boss put a note
in my computer record that I publish an "opt-in" newsletter (def:
you receive it by option, not being forced), and it was totally
    good netiquette.

Looking at it from another angle, our newsletter made the record
    books at my ISP ^_^

P.S. Hope I don't get another call from my ISP after sending this
newsletter ^_^ You can get more information about "spams", "how
to stop spams", & "good netiquette" from

THIS WEEK's FEATURED TOPIC:

    "An Unexpected Day of Rest"

Article:

Since it is a typhoon day, I thought I would write about this
"unexpected day of rest" and leave this week's original topic
"writing a paper" for another time.

It certainly has been a while since a big typhoon hit Taiwan. As
my local friends tell me, I'm lucky to be based in Taichung. The
Central Mountains here helps to block the strong winds.

What did you do before the storm came? I "battened down the
hatches" here at the school (def: close all openings and exits, as
during war times), and made sure all the drains where
"unobstructed" (def: not blocked). I also went to the roof of the
school and removed any bonsai's from high places.

I don't know about you, but I think the strongest winds were last
night. I heard some noises that I usually don't hear. Images of
the school flags flying away came to me. I was wondering if my
    school sign was OK.

Today, while writing this newsletter, the weather is much calmer
than I expected. The school is safe and besides a few small things
on the roof moving around unexpected, everything is fine. It is a
good day to put some more work into our newsletter and website.

It is also a day of unexpected rest away from school activities.
You know I was joking with the "English Summer Camp" children
yesterday if they wanted to come to school during the typhoon to
protect the school. All of them said, "Yes!" When I told them
that they had to stay home today, they all seemed very disappointed
(Wednesday is swimming and computer day). Oh well, you can't win
    them all ^_^

What do you like to do during a typhoon? What are you doing today?

                                                 From Storm Central,

NEXT WEEK's FEATURED TOPIC:
