Free Weekly "Learning English" Newsletter
Issue: 33        "Path to English"        Nov 12, 2000
=====================================================

Dear Reader,

I got so many people writing me about corporal punishment
(issue 31). I was surprised that feedback on this issue is still
coming in. Thank you all for taking the time to share with us
your viewpoint on this issue. As I run a school, I "implicitly"
know the importance of this topic to the development of our youth
(def: without doubt or question). Though I don't expect to change
anyone's mind on this issue, I just hope through our discussion,
some new thoughts can be generated on this old topic.

One of the last articles to arrive in my mailbox was this one. I
want to share it with you as it offers some new insights into
    education as well,
    http://www.path2english.com/Reference/Punishment2.htm

I think our reader, Sara, brings an important issue to home about
education. "If you don't enjoy what you are learning, whatever
you gain is easily given back." Don't you think so? Yes, you
can study hard when you have teachers and parents giving you
pressure. What do you think though is going to happen when you
leave school? Who will be there to pressure you? Are you going
to like studying the subjects you hate in school?

Another case and point, in the West, there are what we call
"professional students". These are people that enjoy learning so
much they would like to stay in school forever. These aren't
people who are afraid to enter society. They are just people who
like very much the stimulation of learning and enjoy the challenge
of discovery. Some of my friends in Canada are "professional
students". Actually, even one of my teachers here at the school
said she wouldn't mind staying university forever if she had enough
money. Does this sound weird to you? Is there anything wrong with
people who want to be "professional students"? Do "professional
    learners" only exist in school?

I say, "Learning doesn't stop after leaving school (so don't cancel
that newsletter after graduating ^_^)." You need to find a method
of learning English that lets you REALLY enjoy it. You need to
love English otherwise it will never come to you. Trust me. You
need to feel alive and excited to be involved with English. You
need to feel all your emotional pistons firing and creative juices
flowing when you are learning. You need to have expressions like
these on your face when you are learning,
    http://www.jacksonfive.com.tw/Students/Students.htm
You need to be able to say to yourself, "gosh, I'm so fortunate to
be learning this, and I would rather be doing this than many other
things." If you don't feel this way yet, please go and discover
    your own "Path to English".

Many of my young students ask their parents to bring them earlier
to the school. One of my adult students even flew back from
Kaoshioung just so she can attend my class on time. Do you feel
this way about learning English? Do you feel this way about
reading our newsletter? If you don't, why not? I am ^_^

THIS WEEK's FEATURED TOPIC:

Since this issue is getting a bit long, I have decided to delay
"Number Worries" another week. I want to give you enough time to
"digest" what I have written above. I don't want to overload you
with English and stop you from enjoying it ^_^

NEXT WEEK's FEATURED ARTICLE:
