JacksonFive's
Free Weekly "Learning English" Newsletter
Issue: 36      "Pursuit of Happiness"      Dec 10, 2000
=====================================================

Dear Reader,

I don't know if you noticed, but I have already written 36 issues
of our newsletter (including this one). Many new readers have
asked me, "How do I improve my English?" First of all, you should
read all the past issues. Each back issue has a "wealth of
information" to improve your English (def: a lot of information).

    You should also visit http://www.path2english.com/Share/Share.htm
and http://www.path2english.com/Tips.htm if you haven't already.
They are a pile of fun to read and they are full of "uplifting"
English messages to help you enjoy life, learning, and learning
for life ^_^ (def: positive, happy messages).

As an early ** Christmas gift ** from me to you (<--see, I even gift
wrapped it), I have created a new page to help you find
    information on our website,
    http://www.path2english.com/Back_Issues/Back_Issues.htm. This
page not only has all the back issues of my newsletter (ones not
listed on homepage), but it also has a useful website search
feature. This "search" will let you find information from any
part of my website: "Back Issues", "English Share", etc.

                                                          Check them out,

THIS WEEK's FEATURED TOPIC:

    "Pursuit of Happiness"

ARTICLE:

I think if you ask most Americans what is the American Dream, they
would tell you the "Pursuit of Happiness". However, what is
happiness and how do you gain it? This is certain the million dollar
  question.

I intend this issue to be an "interactive" issue, and I look forward
to inputs and contributions from you. Together, we will "ponder"
this important topic and hopefully gain some useful insight into life
and how to be happier (def: think about in detail).

Below, I would like to share with you some insightful quotations to
  get our discussion going.

Unquestionably, it is possible to do without happiness; it is done
    involuntarily by 19/20 of mankind.
                                       … John Stuart Mill

Remember that happiness is a way of travel-not a destination.
                                       … Roy M. Goodman

To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part
    of happiness.
                                       … Bertrand Russell

We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of
life, when all that we need to make us really happy is something to
    be enthusiastic about.
                                       … Charles Kingsley

The secret of happiness is not in doing what one likes, but in
liking what one has to do.
                                       … James M. Barrie

The pursuit of happiness, which American citizens are obliged to
undertake, tends to involve them in trying to perpetuate the moods,
    taste, and aptitudes of youth.
                                       … Malcolm Muggeridge

When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look
so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has
    been opened for us.
                                       … Helen Keller

Happiness is wanting what you want, getting what you get, and
    hoping the two will coincide.
                                       … Howard Mumford Jones

So how do we define happiness? There is one definition of happiness
that I found which is really good: "Happiness is a state of
well-being, filled with positive feelings toward oneself and the
  world."

After you have read the above, please give me some input on the
  following questions:
  1) What do you think would make you happy?
  2) What actually makes you happy?
  3) Special events in the past that made you really happy?
