JacksonFive's
Free "Path2English" Newsletter
Issue: 46 "Ships Afloat"
June 10, 2001
=====================================================
Dear Reader,
Request of the week: "Never register your friends' information for
them! Instead, forward them our newsletter so they can register
for themselves."
Since my last newsletter, I have received many emails and telephone
inquiries about the "teacher assistant" position at my school. It
is quite encouraging to hear from so many well-qualified people.
Our readers in general are passionate people with a "higher ideal"
in life (def: greater purpose than just making money). I feel very
fortunate to have "JacksonFive members" in my staff. It is much
easier working with people who have the same "outlook" on life
(def: view). I'm happy to have filled the position with a good
candidate and JacksonFive member. Her name is Ivy.

This last week, I also received an email from a reader inquiring
about "writing lessons". This got me thinking. I told this
reader I have successfully taught English writing in the past
using emails alone (teachers and businessmen). I told him it would
be 1-to-1 and based on my past experience, quite effective and fun.
He is very interested in the idea.
This reminded me that I have received many emails from readers in
the past starting with "Sorry my writing is not so good..." I
wonder how many other readers would be interested in a program of
"1-to-1 writing lessons" from JacksonFive? Would you be interested?
To answer this question, I have created a web page to give you more
information and for you to leave your information if you are
interested, http://www.path2english.com/Writing_Program/InfoCard.htm

Some of you are going overseas for travel and learning English this
summer. I thought I should give you some helpful tips:
1) Don't forget what your purpose of travel is. If it is to learn
English, don't stay with a bunch of Chinese and speak Chinese
while there. It is tempting, but there are cases of Chinese
people living in China Town (US or Canada) for many decades who
don't speak English.
2) Be adventurous and get fully involved in the culture there. Eat
what the local people eat and experience what they experience.
What will it hurt? You won't have a better chance to do this.
Try to get off the beaten path and explore the real local
culture. Of course, don't recklessly risk your safety.
Please do me a favor, remove me from your emailing list or email
address book. I get too many email viruses this way. Also, please
give me your old email address (the one where you receive my
newsletter) if you want to change your address or be removed from
the list. Remember, never register your friends' information
without telling them! I get too many "annoying" emails from people
like, "Who are you and how did you get my information?" (def:
troublesome) I'm made to feel like a thief sometimes ^_^ Thanks!

See you in the next issue!

P.S. I just received an inquiry about our JacksonFive Summer Camp.
Did you know it set a record? It came from a JacksonFive reader
in H.K. with two children. Previous to this, Taipei was the
farthest place that had an interested parent in our Summer
Program. Cool, isn't it!
THIS ISSUES's FEATURED TOPIC:
"Ships Afloat"
This being the month of the famous "Dragon Boat" races, I thought it
would be proper to cover some "ocean going" terminologies. As many
of you will travel abroad during the summer months, take advantage of
opportunities to go on these "ocean going" vehicles.
RIVER BOATS: in the past, these ships where used to transport people
and goods up and down major rivers. During modern times however,
they have taken up the role of showing tourist and partygoers sights
of the city. I have many fun memories of these river boat cruises,
http://www.paddlewheelcruises.com/photos.shtml
(Winnipeg, my
hometown in Canada). Without an exception, they are a great way to
leisurely tour a city. You will see a side of the city that few people see
by car or bus.
FERRIES: a modern "workhorse" which brings people and vehicles to
and from different locations (def: something hard working, doing
routine tasks). A good example would be the BC Ferries (BC,
Canada), http://www.bcferries.bc.ca/
I have "fond" memories of ferry
rides between Vancouver and Victoria (def: happy). These rides are
both practical and fun. Explore this website fully and it will give you
an idea of what a ferry ride is like.
OCEAN LINERS: I never went on one of these before, but I do have
plans for an ocean cruise. You can see pictures of some ocean liners
on this page and also a great looking yacht,
http://www.landrykling.com/about_typesships.html
DRAGON BOATS: this issue wouldn't be complete without any
mentioning of these "Chinese Long Boats". I have found two websites
with excellent stories about dragon boats,
http://www.alvin.org/dragon/history.htm
(a bit of black humor at the
end) and http://www.geocities.com/idbajls/info1history.html
There is
a spelling mistake in the second article ^_^ Can you find it?
So you don't sound like a "land lover", you should visit this website
to acquaint yourself with "onboard terminologies",
http://www.psa-psara.org/terms.htm
(def: someone who is "green"
onboard of ships). Do you know what words like "forward", "aft",
"port", "starboard", "bridge", and "gallery" mean on a ship?
