Readers' Comments

Dear JacksonFive,

Your mail surprised me. Time flies so fast. Now it's July. It seems like
yesterday since I applied for a post from you. After interviewing so many
people, you still remember me. I feel flattered! ^.^

The SARS outbreak did teach Taiwan a lesson and highlights many issues
people get used to. It really left Taiwan a space to recognize what to do
and where to go in the future. One of the most fundamental problems is
that our education confuses us, I think. Most of children, or adults, are
not good at thinking independently. Majority fall in panic when something
come up. Although Taiwanese parents are most concerned about
education in the world, I doubt of their attitudes about showing their
children to Taiwan, to the Earth.

I am sorry to reply so late for arranging to go to U.K. I have won one of
the scholarships this term and been packing for weeks. It really
exhausted me. This is my first trip abroad. So many things have to deal
with so uneasiness fills in my excitement. But it is a precious and
significant event in my life. I want to see a different self after this
experience. All of achievement I can win come from my teachers'
encouragement. I'm thankful that learning English lets me see my
potential. JacksonFive, do you feel some pressure? Your job is not an
occupation merely but a duty. I'm kind of serious, but it certainly can
change someone's life. I am so glad to know that people like you do
  something good to our offspring.

Talk about so much stuff. Hope you won't feel bored. Every time when
discussing education I will become too serious. Sorry! Any word form
you would be most welcome. I am looking forward to your message.

  Sincerely,
  Lucy (August 3, 2003)

Hello,

It is really along time since I last heard from you. I am quite
ashamed that I am always saying "busy" when I write to you, in fact, I am
a little free now, as summer holidays have started! I plan to learn more
English because I 'm planning to teach in a high school next term (i.e, in
September) I found it exciting to teach young kids and teenagers, but at
the same time, i found i myself became lazy in learning more English and
forgetting most of the English language. Generally, teaching young kids
requires less English knowledge but more teaching skills and love, i have
been teaching for nearly ten years and i do think i need to learn more. I
put my whole heart into teaching and won a lot prizes, most of my
colleagues think i am quite successful, but i feel regret that most of
my students are forced to study because of exams! Some or may be
most of them were interested in learning (not only English but also other
subjects) at first, but later they were changed by all kinds of cruel
exams. i hope such things will be changed some years later. i will still
try my best to make my classes interesting and efficient.
Thank you for remembering me! I really enjoy reading your pages.

  With best regards!

Dear JacksonFive,

It is so great to receive your newsletter again. Even though I am not an
active reader, I enjoy reading your newsletter very much. It seems that we
are friends for a long time whenever I read your writing.

I am glad that God bless Taiwan to relieve the condition of getting SARS.
Additionally, everything can be back to normal. In addition to that,
congratulations on the result of hiring new teachers. Because of your hard
work and effort, there will be more Taiwanese children to get better English
education and to have more positive attitude toward learning a foreign
language. I truly believe that your current and future potential students
are very fortunate to have you as their teacher.

I wish all best for you, your family, and your school, and I hope that I can
receive your newsletter soon. Take care and God bless you.

Congratulation for Chloe has turned 1 year old .(She has also turned 3
years old by the Chinese calendar.)

I like your newsletter very much. I hope to get it every time. Thanks. I
admire your student because they have good environment of learning. I
wish JacksonFive that come to Taipei. Because I have two daughters. I
hope them happy learning. If you have the other schools in Taipei that don't

Hello JacksonFive,

I'm ur reader for almost three years covering the period when I was in
China and the time when I'm studying here in Melbourne Uni. I'm so glad
to receive ur letter every time though I haven't written u back anything
except now. I share the joy with u and wish u from the bottom of my heart
a happy and healthy new year for u, ur family and all ur kids. I wish some
day in the future I could be a teacher in ur school. Btw, I'm doing Master
  of Education now.

  All the best.

Hi JacksonFive!

I of course never forget you. I wonder why there is no newsletters
receiving for months. I even suspect whether you lost my email address
or tick out those readers with little feedback. My worry is now cleared
and I am very happy and excited to get your news again.

  Your
celebration of Halloween looked so fancy. Apart from those with
well-off families, children in Hong Kong have little occasions to play
under such good atmosphere. I agree with your views that students are
being requested to rehearse over and over again before those great
events like Christmas or Graduation Ceremony taken place. In order to
give the audience and parents a well-prepared image, they put the
students' fun and enjoyment behind. That can explain why the students
in Asian countries are lack of innovative and creative but more submissive.

From two cases in your newsletter, I'm not sure your school is a full-time
international school with different disciplines or an institution of English
language teaching only for kids. Besides the summer camp your school
organised, any other stay-in short courses will be scheduling throughout
the year's festive vacations, like Christmas or Easter. The B&B you
mentioned is a good idea for parents like us living abroad (Hong Kong)
who eager to get their kids a vacation with special fun and learning
  English as well.

Your have invited some readers to join your English writing club in
several months ago. I in fact want to try. However, being afraid of not
able to meet the requirement, because I seldom wrote essays after
school for years, hesitated to sign up. Do you still have any more place
  yet?

Once again, nice to hear you!

Dear JacksonFive,

I saw the pictures of your baby Chloe on the website, she is so beautiful,
so cute, she really catches my eyes. I guess you are a handsome man,
and your wife, Angel is a beautiful lady.

Every time I read your Newsletter, I feel comfortable, kind and
encouraged. I really enjoy reading your letters.

If I had a chance to go to Taichung, I hope to visit your school.

Dear JacksonFive,

So sorry ! I have not respond you for a long time. I don't know how busy I am.
May be this an excuse for my lazy to give you letter. You are right for the
concept of English teaching environment for children should be funny and
stimulating in last letter. I also agree with your points for English teacher
qualification. I think these people as "foreigner" can teach English with
certificate are easy for teaching in Taiwan (issue 59). There are some
reason to make them so easy to enter schools for teaching as follows:
  1. Taiwan government has no procedure to monitor these teachers
      qualification for these English school.
  2. These English school intend to save money to hire cheaper teacher.
  3. Most parents believe foreigner teacher is good for children learning.
  4. Most parent has no time to understand their teaching courses.
I think these points as above is only my comments in my mind for your
  reference.

Hi Dearest JacksonFive:

This is my first time to write to you, and I am not sure "JacksonFive" is your
name or not. I am a very terrible reader. Sorry!!

Your letters really help me a lot. At the beginning, I couldn't read all letter
because it was all in English. Gradually, I tried to read all of them. They were
simple (you wouldn't use too many new words) and very interesting. Thanks
  for your letters.

Yours Sincerely,

Hello JacksonFive,

How are you? I'm Jane from ShenZhen China, do you still remember me?

Long time not to receive your newsletter, undoubtedly, you are very busy and
happy, since you are waiting for your new baby's coming and are looking
after other JacksonFive children, this is an actually good news for you, and
for all of our JacksonFive members. Wish you and your wife have a lovely
  baby.

During no your newsletters period, I read all of your past articles
carefully in my spare time. I am always shocked by your words which are so
fun and very easy to understand and remember. All the time, I can't help
forwarding these good articles to my friend and discuss with them, or print
out read a loud in the morning, even sometimes I had to stop for thinking
about for a while, from your hard working, we can learn not only English
skills, but also learn how to get along with people, how to struggle for
dream. Refer to "dream", one of your newsletter (16) questions is "Have you
ever had to make a similar tough decision? "Have you ever had to sacrifice
something in pursuit of your dreams?", I'd like to share my thinking with
  you:

Ten years ago, being a young teacher, I made a tough and stupid decision
was to gave up teaching. At that time, I just knew the outside word is very
wonderful, and the opportunity to success is much more than in my home
town. At my that age, maybe "success" simply means money or fame.
However, after many years later, I found it is so shallow, most of us have not
the same feeling like yours, such as: "Put something back into the society
we live in", "Help others grow and in the process grow yourself", or "rather
than continuing to complain about your environment and society, why not
do something about it?", this is a very high realm for people, it is exactly
great, successful happiness. I admire you very much.

On the way to pursuit my dreams, I didn't sacrifice anything but lost my
dream! In fact, till now I understand that my really dream is to be a good
teacher who can not only teach students knowledge but also teach them
how to learn. Regarding this, you are the expert in this field, your easy and
fun techniques for acquiring life-ling English is very worth studying for many
teachers all over the world. So, after thinking hard, I have a tough decision
again ^_^ That is I will give up my current career to go on studying English
to improve Oral, and my best dream is your JacksonFive school will open in
China so that we can have a chance to enjoy your wonderful teaching
  techniques.

By the way, ShenZhen is one of the best beautiful, opening city in China,
more and more foreigners like to live and work in ShenZhen, especial in
NanTou - SheKou. At here, you can not only enjoy very nice weather but
also various original, delicious food all over the country. she was titled as
the international garden city by related committee in 2000.

Welcome to visit China, you will find many wonderful scenes and interesting
culture which can be seen in Taiwan.

I am going to pen off here. Thanks for you attention.

Regards!

Dear JacksonFive,

Congratulations! I am really happy to hear that you will have a baby
girl. It is simply because I am a mother of two girls. Your identity will soon
be changed. When I first knew that I would be a mother six years ago,
my husband and I were very excited as well as our other family members.
We visited the library and bookshops to look for related books. I had been
shopping around all the time to buy many baby's stuff and clothes for
different seasons. You will find that everything is done for welcoming the
new guest. This is one of the happiest period in my life and I always enjoy
every time I think of it. I am happy to share with you my experiences.

Dear JacksonFive,

I am one of the readers of your newsletter. I have rarely replied to
you, so you probably do not know me. I really think that you are an
excellent educator by helping children to learn another language which they
are not familiar with. In addition, you do not only teach them, but also
help them to love this language. Therefore, they can use English naturally.

After I read the newsletter, I could not agree anymore with the idea
that you mentioned in the message. The two sentences are that "Any school
can teach children who already love English. It takes a very good school to
change a negative attitude." This idea makes me think that teachers who
introduce one to a certain field of study are really important. If they can
not inspire their students, how can the students become interested in what
teachers teach. Furthermore, it is hard to make students to learn the same
things once they close their heart.

Finally, I truly think that you do a great job to help Taiwanese
children to learn English. I hope that I can be one of your students one
  day.

Sincerely,
Christina (Oct 4, 2001)

Dear JacksonFive:

Hi..it has been a long time i didn't get your mail, how are you?  I always
wonder that these letters (I receive from you) were written by yourself or
not? However, i know you are always busy with yr fun job and i'm still
very pleased to know anything about you.

Well, for me.. As the long summer holiday drew to a close, i'll come back
to my campus life. About the misconception (issue 51), i need to
emphasize that, i didn't have any misconception. I strongly admire your
enthusiasm in Education and i'm sure no staff want to leave your school
  ^_^

Giving birth to a baby is really a great 'project' for a woman, extra care
is needed especially for a pregnant women.^_^ A baby boy is usually
more 'active' (but also naughty) than a baby girl..if i were you, i would
  rather have a daughter first...haha...

Keep in touch! Take care of yourself and your wife ^_^

Hi there,

I am Hendry Huang. I has found your website from Kimo and admire you for
your devotion. I'm a programmer, too. And always intend to improve my
English. I have learned English for about 12 years. But it not useful because I

  still at a moderate level.

After leaving the army, I decide to try the best to improve my English ability.
At this time, I found your website. I read the newsletter. You know what, I

'Hi How' Jacksonfive,

I just wanna tell you that I benefited a lot from your former newsletter on the
use of "interjections" (issue #45).  I used to work at a publishing company
before. I remember that one time while we were translating a Chinese
storybook into an English one, we suffered a big problem in translating the
interjections.  Before that, I've never thought about the different use of
  interjections between Chinese and English.

Anyway, tks for collecting those useful information for us readers. It's
  interesting and helpful!

Hello JacksonFive,

This is Mignon, I got your letter last Friday in my office. But that was an
old one of your letters, right? Because I have been read it before I
registered JacksonFive family list. But still thanks for your message.

Why I want to be JacksonFive family member? Because I was
impressed by your letters when I read them. I think maybe you are trying
to transmit a message this world isn't really bad. Every of your members
through internet can talk with you and share their feelings or experiences
with you that is human talking, not because of nationality.

I have lived in Tokyo, Japan two years. In there, I met some friends who
are from different countries with me. I connect with them by e-mails then
some friends were gone and some friends still keeping in touch with me
since I back Taiwan three years before.

I always think people together to be friend it must with heart. I do really
thankful for my friends, and I also knew I am such lucky person to
meeting them. Living in Taipei city, I fight with reality everyday. No matter,
I disappointment this world sometime, but my friends' friendship let me
understood this world isn't really bad.

Most people afraid to give because they don't want to get hurt but in other
hand, they still eager to get true heart....that is why I impressed of your
giving,.....I don't think JacksonFive family is just a place to learn English,
even I have such badly English ability,.. But for me, JacksonFive family is
a sharing garden,...anyone can come here and sharing their experiences
  to every family member.

Dear JacksonFive:

I feel warm and upbeat whenever I receive your newsletters.  You are really
creative in using video in recording the learning process which is more
practical than by exams (Issue#41).  Students will be more prone to put in
more efforts if they can see with their own eyes their progress.

Last semester in English (for business) class, our group of students have
our business meeting captured in video and so our strengths and weakness
surface and each of us are more than willing to make improvements.

One of the best mean of tangible self-criticism leading to self-motivated
improvement, moreover fostering deeper understanding and trust between
teacher and learners who knew that teachers are there to help them.

Happy busying

Hi There,

I just want you to know that I share your view of contributing to instead of
complaining about the environment we live in, and that, by doing so, not
only people around you benefit from it, but, most of all, we grow in the
process (mentioned in "Who is JacksonFive?"). Isn't this what this nation
  is lacking of?

Your students probably are the luckiest on the island for not only enjoying
your teaching but also getting the chance to the most decent person they
can be because they have a teacher who knows how to share. Boy, this
is, no  doubt, a value added that probably no other schools would offer.
  Good for you!

Hi Jacksonfive,

Firstly, I would like to take this chance to express my great appreciation
to you since I enjoy reading your newsletters and many wise articles so
much.  This does impress me a lot and they positively impact my thoughts
lately. So, I am not only learning English from you, but trying to look at
the world on the bright side.

I am glad you love Kenting so much because that's the place where I live
close by. During the Chinese New Year holidays, my family went back to
Kenting for a typical family union. Everybody gets together for good food
and converse about everything that happened in the past year. I know quite
well the traffic jam is always a nightmare for the drivers during a long
holiday, I'd rather stay home than go out. However, I might change my
thinking and try to do something different in the future. I believe that you
definitely had a good time during such a local new year vacation (Issue#40).
Hope you will enjoy another happy and successful year in 2001. Thanks
you again for your efforts for helping people to learn English correctly and
  easily.

Dear JacksonFive,

Attention: Mr. JacksonFive

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for leading us to the

Hi, Mr.... Jacksonfive, (Just call me "JacksonFive")

I'm one of the new members of the increasing JacksonFive family. This is
a quick note to let you know that I'm so touched when I got this mail
(newsletter). This is totally beyond my expectation. I knew your website
from the search engine. It's all out of pure curiosity. I just like to see what
kind of e-newsletters about English learning that people can get on-line. I
thought this newsletter would be a commercial one--you know, cold and
very business-like. I'm so wrong, and I'm glad to admit it.

You've done a good job about this about I'm pretty sure that you've heard
this a million times before, but I still like to say--thank tons!

Sincerely,
Gretchen (July 17, 2000)

Some days ago, I found the Website when I surfed online. I graduated
from Providence University this summer, and I majored in international
trade.  My English is not good, so I would like learning English well. I
registered for your newsletter, and I am very excited by receiving your
letter so soon. I shared the newsletters with my good friends right away.
Thanks for you and the other readers!!

Sincerely,
Justine (July 2, 2000)

Hi JacksonFive,

I've passed by your school a few weeks before you had an opening and I
found that the school looks great. I mean, I've been to many language
schools in Taichung, the one you are opening really looked nice. Since
I'm forcing myself to stay at home to study before my exam date comes,
I could not attend your opening ceremony. I'm a royalty reader to your
weekly e-papers and I like it a lot. Hope you'll have a prosperous business
  in your school.

Sincerely yours,
Iris (June 19, 2000)

Dear JacksonFive,

I am a business assistant for my manager on my company. Although
sometimes I was very busy but sometimes I was very boring. l feel there
are no sun in my life so far. Until one day I found you, I feel my life full
of fun and hopeful. Because you are so generous to share your language
knowledge to many people who you don't know. I was touched beyond
words. There are many foreigner (like you) to contribute their knowledge
in Taiwan, opposite the Taiwanese usually is a selfish person. It let me
feel great shame. So, I start to change myself to help the people who
need my help voluntarily. Thank you very much, I think you teach me not
only how to learn English  and also teach me how to share my specialty
to other people. Maybe my English not very well, but I hope you can
know what I want to express.^_^

Your Sincerely, Mandy (June 16, 2000)

Hi Mandy,

Did you know one of my best friends in the World is also called Mandy
Tsai. She is married to a Englishman and living in the UK right now with
   a very cute daughter.

You express yourself quite well and I understand you 100%. First of all,
thank you for much for writing me this email. It is exactly one of my
purposes for creating this newsletter. I want to help people, but I also
want to help "move" my readers to help others. If we all help a few
people around us without monetary reward, not just this country, but the
whole world would be a much better place. I think you would agree.

Thanks again Mandy for sharing this email with me. You are truly a
JacksonFive family member ^_^  Hope to hear from you again soon.

JacksonFive

P.S. not every Taiwanese is selfish and not every foreigner is giving.
Taiwan is still a wonderful place to live, but just has some areas for us to
improve like any country in the World.

Dear JacksonFive,

Really, very thanks for your weekly newsletter.  Today is my first time
receiving your letter.  I don't know what I can say.  I just want to say
"Thank you very much" to you for I am so happy that I can receive your
  email so fast.

Tonight I went to visit and read some topics from your website.  I think if we
don't have Internet then we couldn't have know about you and get so much
useful information. When I read your letter, it makes me feel that I am
reading my pen pal's mail rather than learning English.  I can feel that I am
getting to love English, and I can't wait to share your letter with my
colleagues.  In fact this evening I don't need to work over time, but I'll stay
and can not wait to visit your website.  Hopefully this way I can improve
  my English ability.

Thank you very much!

Dear Jacksonfive,

I am very happy to receive your newsletter.
I am a freshman in your jacksonfive family.  This is the first newsletter that
I got from you.  When I read your newsletter, my friend came to see me.
He found that I was reading the newsletter in English.  He was very surprised
because he known my English is very poor.

He doesn't believe who will write a English letter to me, and he doesn't believe
I will understand it, either.  I told him the letter is very interesting and not
  very difficult.

When he saw the letter he had the same feeling as mine and he decided
to join us.  His English is not very well, and me too. I am not sure that you
will understand what I said.  But I really try my best to write to you. I think
  "Practice makes better", right?

My friend wanted me to ask you a question, may I?
He wants to know, do you like to drink "Chinese tea"?  In fact, he plants
tea trees.  He is a tea farmer . If you like to drink "Chinese tea", maybe he
  can give you some.

We are very gladed to join your jacksonfive family.

Yours Sincerely
Kristy (May 5, 2000)

Hi Jacksonfive,

I really appreciate that you offer such a great "place" for learning English.
It's natural and easy to learn a second language via your newsletter.  I have
told my students about "Jacksonfive".  They just love it and really enjoy
  reading your newsletter.

Thank you,
Jodie (May 4, 2000)

Dear Jacksonfive:

It's wonderful to get your mail again. For some reason unknown, I have not
get any mail for days. Congratulation! It is not easy to win the 1th prize in
a hard competetion. I hold no stocks and have little patient to listen to
technicians' analysis. This topic open a new window for me (issue #10).
  Thanks

Hello JacksonFive,

This is my first time to e-mail you... ^o^
Congratulations for being the champion of the speech contest and the
English debate contest (though it's long time ago)!  Well, I guess you
must have received PILES of congratulatory mails like this. ^o^

I regretted that I didn't have the chance to enjoy your outstanding show on
the stage, but I am VERY GLAD to hear that you've won the
  Championship. ^o^
By the way, I also appreciate that you send weekly mails to help improve
our English. It has really given me lots of help! ^o^

  Have a nice day!

p.s Oh, yes, I love the new logo on the homepage, though I've never seen
  you before! ^o^

Yours Sincerely,
Lisa (April 30, 2000)

Hi JacksonFive,

I was a subcriber with lots of different kinds of newsletters. Yes, most
of them were informative but with a common point - dull. Yours is delightful!
I think you've proved one thing: it's not impossible for people to put an
equal sign between learning and having fun.

Keep up the good work!
Your to-be loyal reader

Hello JacksonFive,

Thank you very much for your compliment. I'm flattered. But I think my
English still has a long way to go. That's why I want to find out an English
teaching website which can help me to further improve my English ability.
I found your program through Kimo search engine. And I'm attracted by it
because I found its content is very practical to me. By the way, I
appreciate that you accepted my (newsletter topic) request and will bring it
out on next week (note issue 6).

This is a good program and I will share it with my friends!

Have a good day!

Hello JacksonFive,

Thank you so much for your help. I'm so excited when I saw this week's
newsletter (issue 6) and you really did a great job. I think the methods
you have written on the newsletter have covered everything I wanted to know.
Maybe that will inspire me to learn how to cook.

It's always a pleasure to write to you since I can learn a lot of English from
you.  Thank you for your effort to collect the information for me at 2:00 in
the morning.  I will commit myself to be your most loyal reader in return.

I'll write to you if I got any questions. Bye-Bye!

Dear JacksonFive,

It does make me "drool" while reading your weekly learning stuff (issue #6).
It is quite helpful and refreshing.

You are doing a great job. I believe in cyber-learning or e-learning!!
  It's fun.
