Purpose
of Education – “View from a student in China”
Nowadays in
China, I mean the mainland, students are busy with their studies. They
have to take the "entrance exams for college". All the
students in high school are doing the same things--read the test
books, do the exercises.
Students in
the college, some of them are busy with their studies, they just want
to take the scholarship, never take part in the school activity.
Another kind of students, they never have classes, they spend all
their time dating the one they think themselves in love with, and of
course, lots of time playing computer games.
Education
in China needs to be improved. Students in class were taught how to
do, not how to think. Teachers always teach students how to do, and
then tell students if you do the same thing as me, problems will be
solve. Students will always remember the way to do, not the way to
think, to think of a way to solve problem. I mean by teaching in this way, students will not be
creative.
As I told
you above, you can see that students in China do things that others
do. If everyone takes the same exam and you don't do the same, maybe
the next you will be in the newspaper as a stranger student.
There are
the rules in the students' lives, rules in the way of teaching. OK,
there are too many rules in China's education. If you are a student in
China, all you can do is to obey all these rules no matter if you want
to or not. And that is the worst point.
You cannot
have your individual character. So if you ask me what is the purpose
of education, I will tell you--individual character, help students to
find themselves, to know themselves. Not to do things which were done
by already done by others.

Hi
Steffi, I also believe that “creativity” is very lacking in the
education system here. With
so much testing and homework, a student’s natural personality and
creativity is sacrificed. Yet, the citizen of the 21st
century should be independent, open minded, and creative to succeed.
Don’t you agree?

Purpose
of Education – “Viewpoint of a mother”
Dear Sir:
Thanks for
your e-mail dated July 08,2001.
I got your
Newsletter from my friend Aidy. He gave me your website and asked me
to try.
I am very
interested in your way to teach children English. Since I have a son
of 7 years old. I teach him English several years before. He could
understand something while he is 3 years old. But until now, he have
not made big progress, because I can not insist on teaching him. Or he
would speak English very well.
So this is
why so many parents send their children to the school. A school is the
right place where the students learn knowledge. Children could stay
together. Learning, playing, competing... these kinds of thing
stimulate their brains to accept new information. Of course, some of
schools are very good, some of schools are not because of taking the
different educational way.
Maybe
Education is the method to make the student to learn knowledge. If a
student could learn something with happiness, the school is the right
school with the right method.
With the
best regard
Michael
Weng
I
agree with you. For lifetime learning and success, the child need to
feel what they are learning is enjoyable, meaningful, and stimulating.

Purpose
of Education – “A Student of Life”
Dear
JacksonFive Club,
I'm very
happy to receive ur letter. Thx a lot!
First,
please let me express my happiness. Beijing will hold 2008 Olympic
Games. As a Chinese, I'm so proud of my beloved country! This also
encourages me to study and work hard for my country.
Second, I
think education is very important. Without education, human beings
can't develop. Without education, everyone will live in a dark place.
Education is like a torch. It can bring us brightness and future.
Every country who wants to be prosperous must have advance education.
From ur
news, I think ur teaching style is wonderful. I have a part time job
as an English teacher. In my class, I try to make the kids happy and
enjoy their study time. In the meanwhile, I'm a university student,
too. In my university, I learn a lot from books, from my teachers,
from my good friends.
What is
education? Life is education! Knowledge is education! Love is
education! Try to cherish what u have! Try to cherish every minute to
learn how to have an instructive life. I'm just like a kid now. But
I'll learn how to grow up little by little! I think books can give us
some knowledge. But that's just a little part. Life is ur good
teacher! I have some good friends on the Internet. I learned a lot
from them. I know how to face my new life.
This year I
just graduated from my university. At beginning, I didn't know what to
do and how to face my new life. But now I find myself in this society.
Life is something u can struggle by urself. I get a lot from my
friends. They teach me how to face future. They can share happiness
and sadness with me. I think the most important teacher and the best
education is our life! Friends! Please cherish all the people around
u!
That's my
thought. I really hope that most people can share it with me!
Hope to
hear from u soon, thx!
Sincerely,
Belinda
Wow!
I like your “Love is Education.”
Beautifully put. There
is a saying in English, “experience is the best teacher.”

Purpose
of Education – “Just give me the space to develop”
Dear
Jackson,
Through
experiencing the very bad education these years, I find the purpose of
education at graduate school.
I think the
purpose of education is to give learners the space to develop
themselves. This fine space includes nice tutors, full facilities, and
enough time. During my graduate study, unlike the studies before, I
manage all the things by myself, including how long the study would
take.
No one push
me to do anything. Just give me the time to fill it up.
That's my
opinion from my experience.
